The tent was starting to light up as the sun rose, shining over the land. Jen had been lying there for the past twenty minutes trying to convince herself to get up, but her nerves were holding her back. Why? Because today was her first day of work and she was seriously regretting not trying to find a work-from-home job.

With a sigh, she pulled herself up off the ground and unzipped the tent. Her plants are looking a little dry, so she decides to water them before grabbing some food for herself.

The time has finally come for her first day of work. The building is located on the far right of the city in a twenty-story-tall building. Her office is located on the fifth floor, full of cubicles and the ringing of phones. She took her desk at the back of the room by the windows and took a minute to breathe deeply before answering the ringing phone.

“Rainy Day Entertainment, this is Jen Winchester. How may I help you?”

I have been on hold for forty minutes! Do you people even have any brains there?

Jen winced at the sharp tone of the woman. “I-I’m sorry to hear that, ma’am. Will you tell me what the problem is?”

The problem is that all of you are stupid! Is this how you treat customers? Forty minutes on hold, ridiculous! I know you people can’t possibly be that busy!

“I understand that, and I’ve already apologized.” She pinched the bridge of her nose. “If you would just tell me your issue we can resolve it and get you off the phone.”

The woman laughed bitterly. “So it’s okay for me to sit on hold for forty minutes but you want to hurry and get off the line?!

“No, ma’am, that’s now what I -”

You just lost a customer, missy!

The line went dead and Jen felt the urge to cry. When she got the job, she had known that she would be dealing with some angry and frustrated customers, it just came with the territory, but on her first day? Not even that, her firstΒ call? What if the woman complained to her boss? There’s no way her boss would forgive her on her first day?

The rest of the day was spent worrying over something she had no control over.

She grabbed some yogurt from the cooler before falling onto the stump with an exasperated sigh. Why must life be so hard? Or maybe it isn’t and she just makes it so.
