πŸ“₯ Incoming >> Letter from Chance Keener

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This is my first time writing a letter for the pen pal project so I’m quite nervous about this! I hope this is up to standard and that the format is okay. If you think I used too many images or made it too long or anything, please let me know your thoughts! I took heavy inspiration from you, Shadami, since I wasn’t sure what to do. I hope that’s okay, and if it’s not, feel free to let me know ^~^/ You can also skip straight to the letter if you want haha If you’d like to also be a pen pal for Jennifer, feel free to contact me here or on the forums.

With a yawn, I shuffled out of bed and fell into the computer chair, scanning my e-mail before deciding that there was nothing worth my time, just a bunch of spam and auto-subscriptions. I was just about to check the Pen Pal forum when my mom, Paren, called out to me from the kitchen.

“Jen, can you get the mail?”

“Yeah, sure.” Shuffling out of the room, I glanced at my mother standing in the kitchen, washing the dishes from breakfast. She’d be leaving for work soon.

When I stepped outside, I winced at the bright sunlight that fell over me and I had to blink a few times to get my eyes to adjust. Our house doesn’t have much lighting so it stays kinda dark, even during the day, so my eyes always need time to adjust when I head outside. It’s hot outside today, maybe it’ll rain?

I pulled the clump of mail from the mailbox, briefly glancing over everything. All the bills were addressed to my mom while the advertisements just have our house address written on them.

Wait, what’s this? A letter for me? I scratched my cheek as I thought about who might be sending me something in the mail. Wait a minute… could it be? A pen pal! I rushed into the house, tossing the mail onto the counter before plopping down onto the squeaky blue sofa.

In the corner of the envelope was the name Chance Keener and an address. In the center was my name. I carefully opened the envelope and unfolded the letter, my eyes scanning the printed word. As soon as I was done, I grabbed a pad of paper from my room and nearly toppled the kitchen chair over when I fell into it, making my mom give me a weird look as she stepped out of her room.

“I’m going to work,” she announced, kissing her dog, Biscuit, on the head. “I love you, Jen.”

I smiled at her a bit awkwardly. “You, too.”

SayingΒ I love you has always felt weird to me, even if it’s just to my mother. I waited for her to leave, locking the door behind her before I started to write out my reply.

Dear Chance,

Thanks so much for reaching out to me, it’s nice to meet you! My name is Jennifer Plevins, but you already know that, huh? I’m also a bit socially awkward, but I’ll do my best to correspond with you. I’d love to be your pen pal!

Your husband is working on being an author, too? That’s pretty cool! I’ve always dreamed of being a bestselling author since I was a kid. My favorite genre to write is fantasy and magic. I seem to have trouble focusing on one story, though, always bouncing around between different ones and never finishing a single story! I wonder, does your husband also have this problem? Probably not haha

Thanks for telling me about yourself. I bet having kids can be difficult, huh? I’m single with no kids unless you count my cat, Mist. I’ll add a picture of her to the end of this letter in case you’d like to see her. I live with my mother in Willow Creek and I’m currently between jobs. I’m looking while also working on my writing, but so far, I haven’t had much luck. My mom, Paren, works as a Barista while also studying to be a nurse!

I can’t wait to get to know you more, I hope we can be good friends in the future. Oh, maybe I should tell you about what I enjoy doing! I’m a geeky sim, so I enjoy playing video games and collecting things I find that I think are cool. Currently, I’m working on completing my Voidcritter collection. I know it’s aimed toward kids, but I can’t help but be excited trying to collect them all.

Until next time,

* Jennifer Plevins

Satisfied with my response, I searched through the drawers until I found an envelope and carefully folded the letter. I was just about to close it when I remembered that I had promised a picture of Mist. I can’t believe I almost forgot, that wouldn’t have been a good first impression.

I snapped a picture of Mist as she sat on the kitchen counter before heading to the computer to print it out on a small, blank sheet of paper.

After making sure it was properly sealed, using my finger and water from the sink because that glue is disgusting, I carefully copied the address onto the envelope before taking it outside.

My first ever pen pal… what an exciting new experience! I wonder what this will mean for the future.
